Leave Your Home Warm Enough to Protect the Plumbing

You might be tempted to just turn the heat off completely in your home before you leave in order to save money. However, this can lead to long-term damage to your plumbing if the weather gets bad enough that your pipes freeze. We recommend lowering the temperature in your home significantly but leaving the heat on just in case.

Turn Off the Water Supply, in Case Your Heat Goes Out

Another way to protect your plumbing and prevent water damage as things thaw is to turn off the water supply completely. You’ll need to drain all your plumbing after turning off the water and opening all the faucets, showers, etc. If your home uses any steam or hot water heating system, talk to your local HVAC expert about how to properly prepare the system to be off for an extended period.

Take a Day or Two to Catch Up with Any Maintenance and Repairs

The last thing you’ll want to do is leave a long to-do list of maintenance and repairs waiting for you when you get back. Try to tackle any winter tasks or other organizational things before you leave so that you can come home and enjoy your space without feeling stressed.

Remove Anything That Might Attract Pests

Lastly, remove anything that might draw pests or critters into your home while you’re away. You’ll want to clean out your fridge, get rid of any trash, and dispose of any food in the cabinets that bugs or mice can get into while you’re away.
